Definition
Surrender is the option to fold a bad hand for half its cost. You forfeit the round; the dealer takes half your bet and returns the other half.
Late vs early surrender
If a table offers surrender, look for the rule on the felt placard. "LS" means late; "ES" means early. Many online and casino tables don't offer surrender at all.
When to surrender (late, S17)
In H17 games, add: Hard 17 vs dealer A — surrender. (S17 games stand on this hand.)
Why surrender saves money
Hard 16 vs dealer 10 is the worst hand in blackjack. You lose roughly 76% of the time playing it out (hitting), 77% if you stand. Either way, your expected loss is ~0.54 of your bet.
Surrender locks in a 0.5 loss instead. That's 0.04 cheaper per hand played — small in isolation but real over time. Across thousands of hands, taking the right surrenders is one of the cheapest ways to lower your expected loss.
How to surrender at a real table
Verbal call alone isn't enough. Most casinos require a hand signal: draw a horizontal line behind your bet with your finger and say "surrender." Both signals are needed because the cameras need to verify your action.
Surrender must be your first action. If you've already hit, doubled, or split, surrender is no longer available.
Practice in BJNP
Three of the 7 table presets in Blackjack Navigator Pro include late surrender. The coaching system shows when surrender is the correct play, and the Strategy Explorer lets you look up surrender plays for every rule combination.
