Hard Hand

A hard hand has no flexible Ace. Drawing a 10-value card risks busting. Hard hands are inflexible compared to soft hands.

• 10-7 — hard 17. No Ace.
• 9-8 — hard 17. No Ace.
• A-7-9 — hard 17. The Ace must count as 1; otherwise the total would be 27 (bust).
• 5-7 — hard 12.
• A-2-3-9 — hard 15. Ace forced to 1.

If you draw an Ace and a soft hand becomes too high to keep counting the Ace as 11, the Ace automatically demotes to 1. The hand becomes hard.

Hard 12–16 are the most difficult blackjack hands. You're too low to stand confidently against a strong dealer upcard, but a single 10-value draw busts you. Basic strategy splits these decisions by dealer upcard:

• Hard 12–16 vs dealer 7–A: Hit. The dealer is strong; you have to chase a higher total.
• Hard 13–16 vs dealer 2–6: Stand. The dealer is weak (likely to bust); let them take the risk.
• Hard 12 vs dealer 2–3: Hit. The math is closer here than for hard 13.
• Hard 16 vs dealer 9, 10, A (with surrender): Surrender. Recovers half your bet on a hand that's losing two-thirds of the time.

Some hard hands are highly profitable:

• Hard 11: Always double down (except vs dealer Ace in S17). The most profitable play in basic strategy.
• Hard 10: Double vs dealer 2–9; hit otherwise.
• Hard 9: Double vs dealer 3–6; hit otherwise.
• Hard 17+: Always stand.
