Soft Hand

A soft hand has at least one Ace counted as 11. You can always hit a soft hand without busting on the next card, because the Ace will demote to 1 if needed.

• A-6 — soft 17 (also a soft 7 if the Ace is forced to 1)
• A-7 — soft 18
• A-2-3-4 — soft 20
• A-A — soft 12 (split this; never play it as a single hand)

A soft hand becomes hard automatically if drawing more cards forces the Ace to count as 1. For example: A-6 (soft 17) plus 8 = hard 15 (not 25), because the Ace demotes.

Soft hands give you a free shot. You can hit aggressively because you can't bust on the next card. Basic strategy reflects this:

• Soft 13–15: Hit (or double on certain dealer upcards if rules allow).
• Soft 16–17: Hit (or double vs dealer 3–6).
• Soft 18: Stand vs dealer 2, 7, 8. Double vs dealer 3–6 (if allowed). Hit vs dealer 9, 10, A.
• Soft 19+: Stand (with rare double exceptions vs dealer 6 in H17 games).
• A-A (soft 12): Always split. Never play as a single hand — soft 12 is one of the worst totals in blackjack.

Soft 18 (A-7) is the hand most players misplay. It looks like a strong total — close to 20 — but it loses badly to dealer 9, 10, or A. The math says hit those (the Ace demotes to 1, you draw to a higher total, and you've still got a shot). Standing on soft 18 vs dealer 9 is a common mistake that costs real money.
